Restoration of the Rustic Bridge, Cassiobury Park (2019)

Value £75k

Whilst undertaking the Cassiobury car park project, we were invited to assist with the design restoration of the existing timber “Rustic Bridge” over the River Gade that runs through Cassiobury Park. This was part of a £4.95M restoration project in the park, funded by the Heritage Lottery. The project involved structural repairs, new surfacing and replacement of the balustrades with a new hand carved design. This was to be more in keeping with the heritage of the park, and to follow part of a design theme that will be mirrored in other areas throughout the park. Health & Safety was at the forefront of planning and executing the works as the bridge had to remain open to the public throughout.

The existing balustrades were replaced with intricately designed panels of interlocking green oak. Fitting to an existing structure proved challenging given the variances in level, aperture, camber and movement of the bridge frame over time. Each piece of timber had to be hand cut, finished and fitted whilst on site. Our specialist team worked closely with the designer and engineer to find solutions without compromising the design or quality. Our labours were amply rewarded as the client was absolutely delighted by the finished result.
